Initial Supplies for Mom's and Babies
Items you should consider buying before you come home from hospital

By: Rebecca Bahlmann

The following is a collection of initial supplies purchased as well as one item purchased prior to birth but was intended for use after birth. They are all excellent products and would be recommended any new expecting family to investigate them - I've personally used them and have yet to find a suitable substitute.

Pre/Post Oils and Gels:

Weleda Wild Rose Oil [BUY] Mustela Post Partum Restructuring Gel [BUY]
I did not have any stretch marks before I gave birth, something I realized is rare – but probably due to good genes and my frequent use of oils (Weleda wild rose oil). My skin has always been dry, so I have always put cream all over after showering or bathing. Whilst pregnant I made sure to put extra amounts of oil on my belly. It seems however that I missed the area round my belly button, because after the birth there were  few one inch long ones. I promptly went online and after reading reviews bought Mustela’s post partum restructuring gel. IT WORKS. It does not, as some claim smell amazing, but, the fact that it works is the main thing. I started using it after the birth, twice a day and my baby is now 7 months and 1/3 of the bottle is still left – so – it really lasts a long time and is well worth the price. This is your belly – an important part of your body, that needs to be taken care of – your husband will appreciate it.

Creams and Shower Gels:

You can only get these supplies from UK, but if you can afford them, they are worth the extra money. The E45 Shower Cream is especially nice to have around as it cleans skin without soap and the Aqueous cream is excellent for keeping skin hydrated.

E45 Shower Cream [BUY] Aqueous Cream BP [BUY]
Free from soap and detergents it actively moisturizes dry skin and protects against further drying. It cleanses gently and effectively, leaving dry, itchy skin feeling soft, clean and more comfortable. Clinically proven, and recommended by dermatologists for cleansing dry skin with eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. Perfume free - Allergy Screened.  A soothing cream for use on dry or chapped skin

Breast Pump:

After a lengthy search, we settled on this pump made by Medela. There are many different other brands to choose from but few have any kind of reviews or come recommended. What we found is the simpler it looks the less likely it will be useful - not to mention powerful enough. If you are pumping you want something that works reliably, is safe, and is efficient. It has been our experience that few breast pumps meet this criteria. You should also take into account whether or not you will be having multiple children. If you are not, and potentially not sure how long you will be breast feeding, find something cheaper (potentially a cheaper Medela model). However, if you are planning on having multiple children and/or breast feeding for a long time, get something like the model we are recommending (backpack is a huge plus!) Beware of anything with batteries!

Medela Pump In Style Advanced Backpack [BUY]
Great portable option for moms on the go. Reliable and will last through multiple uses and kids. This brand is frequently the product of choice for hospitals and while it looks and is sophisticated, it is actually quite easy to use.
