Moon Dough or Play-doh?
Fun, inexpensive, creating activities for your child

By: Pauline Hackemann

Are you at a lose for finding fun, creative things for your child to do? Perhaps your child follows you around waiting for you to entertain them? We've found comfort in something oddly enough called Moon Dough and I gotta tell you, once your kids get introduced to it, they are in for some serious fun! Simply set up the "factory" along with some dough and show your kids what to do, and then stand back - they will take it from there. Its good for up to an hour of fun for kids at a time... and once you get new colors of dough to play with the fun starts all over. Before long, you kids will be manufacturing all kinds of exciting things that they will no doubt want to show you. You might even get hooked yourself.

Moon Dough Pros

  • Moon dough does not dry out
  • Moon dough makes more exact sculptures
  • Toys that require coordination – for example a crank – kids love the crank
  • The crank toys enable the children to make 12 dogs for example, in a very small amount of time and they then play with those dogs
  • Sticks together well and sculpts better than play-doh
  • Does not stick to the mould like play-doh
  • Moon dough does not seem to age the way play-doh does – it lasts longer and feels cleaner.
    • Easier to sweep up from a hard floor (not sticky)
  • It is wheat free (allergens)

Moon Dough Cons

  • Moon dough is less about sculpting with your hands directly (freeform) and more about making shapes with molds.
  • Moon dough can crumble, especially in dry air (but so does play-doh sometimes)
  • Some people say it has a bad smell, but I never noticed this
  • The lids of the moon shaped storage containers are hard to put on (but ok if you press hard)
  • The moon shaped storage containers do not stack well
  • Moon dough is not flexible like play-doh – you need molds.

We love this – kids love it:
