Balancing child rearing with living your life

By: Rebecca Bahlmann

A reading list that has actually been read by someone who just had a baby. This is a list of books we found helpful in preparing for our new addition as well as raising her. We only list books we felt provided some useful advice. There is so much rubbish out there it is really "buyer beware". This list is from one mother to another or to a perspective mother.

First Year:
What to Expect When You Are Expecting
By: Heidi Murkoff

My Take: Great source of information about what is happening to your body from conception to birth. There is also a small section for new dads which we read together. Primarily pregnancy and preparations for and after birth advice, limited caring for child advice.

First Year:
The Contented Little Baby
By: Gina Ford

My Take: From blacking out baby's room to holding off with the solid foods, this book is full of extremely useful tips that actually work if you practice what she preaches. We didn't follow her advice to the letter to reap the benefits. However, we can't believe how anyone could rate Gina's books as "a joke". A few pre-birth suggestions, but mostly after birth advice.

Follow up - Excellent book – no rocking, no long nights, children who go to bed and sleep all night, No bottles, no pacifiers, but happy sleepers – get this book if you get no other. I buy one for all my friends and one friend said it was her favorite baby shower gift!

Second Year and Beyond:
From Contented Baby to Confident Child
By: Gina Ford

My Take:
Just as the first book, is extremely helpful with advice on diet, sleep, how to put a baby to sleep, and clothing. The troubleshooting sections are the best! The sleep section alone is worth its weight in GOLD, read it and you will get some of your life back.
