AGC - Automatic Gain Control
By: Christine Martz
Meaning of AGC – “Automatic Gain Control”, A circuit which automatically
normalizes the the output of an electronic component by boosting or lowering incoming
signals to match a preset level so that that the output signal level is virtually constant.
If someone was singing into a microphone, the person's voice might
vary from very loud at some moments, producing a stronger signal. Other parts of the
song might require singing in a softer voice, which would produce a weaker signal. AGC would give
weaker signals more gain and stronger signals either less gain or none at all.
ACG is used in modems, faxes, multiplexers as well as radios, CDROM
drives, amplifiers and video.

“…In digital AGC systems, it is relatively easy to
provide a variable threshold or "knee." Input signals below the threshold do
not actuate the digital AGC and are not compressed. At thresholds well above
the receiver noise floor, a receiver therefore gets quiet when only puny
input signals are present in the passband. At thresholds near the noise floor,
all signals are boosted to meet the output-level criterion. The net effect of
a variable threshold is very much like that of an IF gain control.” [Adaptive Digital Technologies]
“… In audio recording, a circuit used to automatically
control the volume of the recorded signal without distortion due to overload.
An AGC-defeat control permits manual volume control for wide ranges and other
special recording purposes. It is sometimes called automatic level control (ALC),
or automatic volume control (AVC).” [Extron Electronics]
“…Automatic Gain Control (AGC) is a feature that adjusts
the level of the recorded data to some nominal level. The AGC algorithm is
implemented in the encoder subcomponent and is parameterized using a set of
standard parameters.” [Dialogic Corporation]
“…Cisco Unity automatic gain control (AGC) gives subscribers
consistent message playback levels through the normalization of recordings. AGC
affects recordings only. It is on by default, is controlled by registry settings,
and is applied to voice samples after they have passed through all external hardware.
AGC does not improve the quality of recordings; it only addresses volume issues.
For example, it cannot improve garbled incoming messages.” [Cisco Systems]
