C64 - Commodore 64
By:Bruce Bahlmann
A popular home computer produced by Commodore Business Machines founded in January 1982 by Jack Tramiel. The C64 was released in September 1982 for a price of 5 US that included unprecedented value (sound and graphics performance) for the money. C64s very aggressive pricing in comparison to competitors quickly started a price war for computer hardware. With estimated sales between 17 and 25 million units by the time it was discontinued in 1993, the C64 became and remains the best-selling computer model of all time. The cost of building each C64 was estimated at 5 US due to Commodore's vertical integration, leaving a large margin to work with.
