An (ITU-T) audio standard desribing a half-duplex codec where an 8 bit compressed Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) samples for signals of 'toll' quality voice frequencies at the rate of 8000 samples/second and 8 bits per sample. G.711 encoder will thus create a 64 kbit/s bitstream. G.711 was released for usage in 1972. The uncompressed G.711 format is a required codec for (H.323) audio and videoconferencing in order to allow connections to legacy telephone networks.
