Part of the OpenCable standards effort championed by CableLabs to help the cable industry deploy interactive services. OCAP was formed in 1997 and solves the problem of proprietary operating system software, thereby creating a common platform for interactive television applications and services. Interactive, bi-directional, OpenCable products require an OCAP middleware stack. OCAP leverages Digital Video Broadcast's (DVB)'s Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) which is a similar standard used within Europe.
