The consortium of four cable operators Telecommunications, Incorporated (TCI), Time Warner, Cox, and Comcast created in early 1996 to define an interoperable specification for cable modem systems that would eventually be renamed as Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). As it turns out the name MCNS was not unique and already held by a 3rd party, so it could not be used as the offical name for the data over cable technology.
