A Television (TV) system with 16 times the resolution of current HDTV that supports 24 channel sound, U-HDTV has a screen resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels and was first introduced by Japan's NHK in September 2006 in Europe at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam. U-HDTV requires an optical link to transmit its video to subscribers - however no existing TV broadcasting system can cope with the massive amount of data which needs to be sent to create a U-HDTV picture. While U-HDTV is anywhere from 10-25 years ahead of its time, near term applications like high resolution video archiving may create a nitche.
