A spread spectrum technique developed by the military that combines good noise resistance, immunity to reflections and efficient use of the spectrum for carrier modulation in digital transmissions. OFDM uses a composite of narrow channel bands to enhance its performance in high frequency bands such as 5.x GHz in urban and rural applications where building clutter and foliage can negatively impact the propagation of radio waves. OFDM is sometimes called Discrete MultiTone (DMT) modulation and represents a transmission technique based upon the idea of Frequency-Division Multiplexing (FDM) where multiple signals are sent out at different frequencies.
