A unique sequence of characters used to identify an event, object, packet, tape cassette, or some other individual item. IDs are used in software programming to label data structures such as records, arrays, hashes. IDs are used in networking to describe a string of bits or characters that are related such as those within a packet. IDs are also used in general telecommunications and data processing systems to name or characterize a set of data elements. IDs are also used in special cases such as in MPEG where IDs identify which video object of the segmented video data signals a pixel of the rectangular picture belongs.
