An image compression format standard with a defined file format meant especially for motion applications. MJ2 is a wavelet-based compression method that has many benefits over the discrete cosine transform (DCT) compression methods used in (JPEG). It provides compression ratios up to 40 to 1, which is a 100 percent improvement in compression efficiency over JPEG. MJ2 is helps to build the studio systems and consumer electronics necessary to migrate digital cinema into the home theater and addresses the interoperability problems, lack of standardization, content protection issues and other problems that have kept the back the deployment of high-resolution digital cinema and home theatre. MJ2 was standardized in 2002 as part of ISO/IEC’s JPEG 2000 (JP2) standard ISO/IEC Intl. Std. 15444, Information technology – JPEG 2000 image coding system, Part 3.
