A companion protocol used to maintain Quality of Service (QoS) for Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP), which is an Internet Protocol (IP) that transmits real-time voice and video for the purpose of for IP telephony. Like RTP, RTCP runs on top of User Datagram Protocol (UDP). RTP does the delivery of the actual data, where as RTCP is used to send periodic transmissions of control packets to participants in a call. RTCP monitors statistics on the connection and is used primarily for giving feedback on the quality of service being provided by RTP. It is defined in RFC 3550.
