A dynamic inter-domain routing protocol, one of the core routing protocols in the Internet, used between two or more autonomous systems (AS) to exchange routing information. BGP allows the routers to exchange only prespecified information with prespecified routers in other domains through efficient, loop-free routes. BGP works as a path vector protocol by maintaining a table of IP networks or 'prefixes' which designate network reachability between AS. BGP does not use technical metrics, but makes routing decisions based on network policies or rules. The current version of BGP, BGP version 4.
