A set of rules specified in for encoding data units described in Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1). BER can specify more than one way to encode some values and for this reason is not used as often as Distinguished Encoding Rules (DER). BER uses the concept of an 'identifier'. An identifier is a unique code assigned to every data-type. This identifier acts as the calling code for that data-type. BER is an self-identifying and self-delimiting encoding scheme, which means that each data value can be identified, extracted and decoded individually.
