The GGF was a community that grew out of a series of conversations, workshops, and Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions that addressed issues related to grid computing. The first of these BoFs was held at SC98, the annual conference of the high-performance computing community. That meeting led to the creation of the Grid Forum, a group of grid developers and users in the U.S dedicated to defining and promoting grid standards and best practices. In 2006 in a merger of the Global Grid Forum and the Enterprise Grid Alliance Led to the The Open Grid Forum (OGF). The OGF models its creations of open standards on the IETF.
The Global Grid Forum (GGF) were a group of individuals made up of researchers and practitioners working in research, development, deployment, and support activities pertaining to high-capability distributed software systems, or “grids.” The range of the applications included high performance processing applications, distributed collaborative environments, distributed data analysis, and remote instrument control.
The GGF working groups investigated research topics related to distributed systems, best practices for the design and interoperation of distributed systems, and the development of recommendations regarding the implementation of grid software.
In 2006 in a merger of the Global Grid Forum and the Enterprise Grid Alliance led to the Open Grid Forum (OGF). The OGF models its creations of open standards on the IETF. The OGSA, OGSI, and JSDL standards were created by the OGF.
Other Related Definitions for GGF
"Global Grid Forum (GGF) promotes and supports the development, deployment, and implementation of Grid technologies and applications via the creation and documentation of "best practices" - technical specifications, user experiences, and implementation guidelines. GGF efforts are also aimed at the development of a broadly based Integrated Grid Architecture that can serve to guide the research, development, and deployment activities of the emerging Grid communities." [consortiuminfo.org]
"GGF is a community-initiated forum that promotes and supports the development, deployment, and implementation of distributed computing, or "Grid" technologies, through the creation and documentation of "best practices"and standard technical specifications. As GGF's community, presently 4000-5000 strong, is spread across the globe, provides a location-transparent workspace for project-focused communication and collaboration among widely dispersed teams." [Vasoftware]
“You can think of it as a unifying architecture for distributed computing at scale. That use of grids in enterprise architectures is what “hints at mainstream adoption. Leading IT departments are already consolidating hardware, using virtualisation, automating IT business processes and “moving to grid-like shared infrastructures” [Mark Linesch - Open Grid Forum Chief Executive]
“Providing the automated intelligence needed by enterprise grid data centers is Availigent’s mission, and we are pleased to join the Open Grid Forum as it strives to bring standardization to grid software. One of the OGF’s goals is to better integrate enterprise grid architectures with virtualization efforts, and that meshes perfectly with Availigent’s application virtualization capability.” [Bud Michael - Availigent CEO]
