LCD - Liquid Crystal Display
By:Bruce Bahlmann
A thin, flat display device usually containing three separate LCD glass panels, one each for red, green, and blue components of the image signal being fed into the projector ore reflector. As light passes through the LCD panels, individual pixels, or 'picture elements', can be opened to allow light to pass or closed to block the light, as if each little pixel were fitted with a Venetian blind. This activity modulates the light and produces the image that is projected onto the screen. It is prized by engineers because it uses very small amounts of electric power, and is therefore suitable for use in battery-powered electronic devices.

Other Related Definitions for LCD
"An electronic display panel that is based on the properties of a liquid-crystal material sandwiched between two transparent plates and illuminated from behind. The transmittance of the liquid-crystal material changes with the applied electric field. (Inglis & Luther, 1996)" [adec]

"Liquid Crystal Display. A full-color display screen on cameras used to preview and review pictures and view information, such as menu options and camera settings." [kodak]

"An LCD is a liquid crystal display. LCDs are most often used for notebook computer screens and is used in electronic computer projection equipment. Active and passive matrix LCD. Active matrix LCDs are more responsive and therefore appropriate for full motion video, computer animation, and fast mouse movement. Active matrix also provides a higher degree of color saturation."
