DMB - Digital Multimedia Broadcasting
By: Preethi Ramkumar
Meaning of DMB – “ Digital Multimedia Broadcasting”, is a way to deliver television services to mobile receivers, even at high speeds (cars, buses, trains, etc.). DMB technology is based on the established Eureka 147 Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) radio standard with additional error correction.
VDL, one of the three technical actors for digital radio in France, was soon a forerunner on the market of the multiplexing equipment used to broadcast video programs over DMB.
VDL worked with the Korean public broadcaster KBS to define the future DMB standard and adapted its D-VAUDAX DAB multiplexer for that purpose, in tight collaboration with its customer. In addition, VDL sold DMB multiplexers to Korean laboratories and research centres to support their development programs in the field of dedicated receivers.
Today, VDL proposes DMB solutions to concerned broadcasters, giving them the benefits of its unique experience. Having built strong partnerships with European companies, VDL is able to offer complete solutions, covering the whole digital chain, from MPEG-4 encoding of the video signals, to their terrestrial broadcast after multiplexing them.
Radio is at the most exciting stage of its development for decades. The move into the digital domain opens up a world of new possibilities of new stations, enhanced features, an enriched listening experience and new revenue opportunities for broadcasters.
Digital broadcasters not only deliver video and voice, but may also include data files and entire applications. For instance, the broadcast of a talent show or political debate may include a software application to facilitate voting by the viewers. "That back-channel capability, and the ability to deploy applications alongside a TV program, make digital broadcasts an exciting new territory for developers," says Ivan Wong, a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Motorola's Mobile Device Business, and JSR 272 co-lead.
Other Related Definitions:
“…The process of broadcasting multimedia over the Internet, or satellite, to be tuned in by multimedia receivers, or players, capable of playing back the multimedia program. Through a process called multicast, a single broadcast can send programming to thousands of receivers, which can play back the content individualized to the location. This is one of the advantages of multimedia broadcasting over traditional video broadcasting.” [Scala]
“…The rushing trend of digital revolution has resulted in personalized and mobile communication service and is now creating a new stream of personalized and mobile TV broadcasting service and at the center of the stream is Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB).
DMB refers to mobility-specific services capable of providing high quality audio and video contents.”

“…A new transmission system is necessary for the Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) service in Korea. So, in this paper, we propose the architecture of a new transmission system for DMB service base on Eureka 147. Ensemble Remultiplexer, which is of the essence of the proposed system to remultiplex ETI frame and MPEG-2 transport stream, is designed and implemented. The proposed system provides a solution with high flexibility and low cost for the multimedia broadcasting service. The functions of this transmission system have been verified by using our DMB receiver and other related systems. ” [Actapress]
“…DMB provides CD-quality-level sounds, data and video services via mobile handsets, while their holders move or stay in certain places. It is classified into terrestrial DMB and satellite DMB according to transmission means.” [ Expert Views, Inc]
