It is a completion of subscribers loop to connect devices over a multiple access radio system to PSTN. This connection is different from a standard local loop. This connection to the telephone system is made wireless and without cables.

WLL is a technology that uses radio signals to substitute for copper wires and is sometimes call Radio in the Loop (RITL) or Fixed-Radio Access (FRA). The bandwidth is much higher than what is possible using the cooper loop. WLL is an economical and practical solution for connecting subscribers in areas that do not have a wired infrastructure such as rural areas and developing countries (Iraq and others). Developing countries look to the WLL technology as a way to extend POTS for millions of subscribers without the expense of purchasing copper wire.

There are various types of WLL technologies:

  • CDMA
  • GSM
  • IS136 TDMA
  • and analog access technologies such as Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS)
