Description of Software:
Birds-Eye.Net DHCP Snoop Agent (trawl) spies on DHCP packets and captures
information about the correspondence between hardware addresses, hostnames,
and various other data fields of interest. DHCP Snoop Agent counts the
number of DHCP messages of particular types (discovers, requests, releases,
etc.) for each client hardware address and stores them in a hash file. This
hash file may be dumped as text strings using the companion utility (jdbz).
During the lifetime of a particular DHCP Snoop Agent invocation, DHCP
clients may send and receive multiple packets. DHCP Snoop Agent maintains
counters for each packet type.
Particulars about this software:
- DHCP information captured:
- Hardware identifier (chaddr) - hardware address of
the client sent in DHCP chaddr field
- DHCP identifier (Option #61) - sent by client to the
server
- Hostname (Option #12) - sent by client to the server
- IP Address - DHCP conferred IP address in use by the
client
- Giaddr - IP address of the agent that initially
relayed the broadcast packet as contained in the giaddr field of the
DHCP packet
- Counters:
- Discovers
- Requests
- Declines
- Releases
- Informs
- Lease Queries
- Bootp Requests
- Selecting Requests
- Renewing Requests
- Rebinding Requests
- Rebooting Requests
- Offers
- Acks
- Bootp Replies
- Nacks
- Other Message Types (unknowns)
- Timestamp (in UTC seconds) - when this data record
was last updated. This will be the same as the last time that client
sent a DHCPREQUEST message from the selecting or init-reboot
state
- Vendor Class (Option #60) - as sent by the client to
the server
- Relay Agent Information (Option #82) - as inserted
into the initially-broadcasted DHCP packet by the relaying agent (See
RFC3046)
- Man pages of tools included:
DHCP Snoop Agent Features:
- Linux Release
- Linux RPM for easy installation
- For Linux (Ubuntu or Fedora) running Kernel version
2.5.11 and higher
The DHCP Snoop Agent can be used in many different ways. For
example:
- Troubleshoot differences in DHCP client software behavior
- Snoop production networks to determine correct mix of
packets for proper emulation in the lab
- Snoop stress testing of new DHCP software by exposing
what clients are getting answered and what clients are getting ignored
