PHASE #17
This is the time when it pays to do things right the first time

All the detail work inside begins. My father is a terrific resource for doing much of this. I'm also pretty good at this, problem is motivation for me. Try working 8-10 hour days at work only to come home and put in another few hours. It begins to drag on you after a while. What is worst at this point, we have eclipsed the 1 year mark on the project. While we have come a long way, there is still much left to do... siding, bathrooms, hardwood floors, trim, doors, etc...

My father the craftsmen... helps me install the railings on the second and third floors. We needed these to prevent the little ones from backing into the stairwell and falling. We also rebuild the third floor stairs which until this point only had temporary treads on them. The third floor steps were not a full depth as the first steps that ran from the first floor to the second floor but we used the same over lap (amount of overhang that each step sticks out from the kick board).

Here the third floor railings are nearly complete. The biggest trick was to carefully measure and drill the holes for the spindles. Read next section for some enlightening advice if you choose to do this yourself.

Here is the finished second floor railings. We had this one all done, only to find out we spaced the spindles incorrectly. Initially we had them 6" apart (center to center). My mother came upstairs to inspect them (as she likes to keep tabs of things) only to say, "You don't suppose there is some code that states what the distance needs to be." We were dumbfounded! After an hour of calling around on a Saturday Night, we found out that there is a code and it states that an object no more than 4" in diameter must not be able to pass through the spindles -- not even at the top where the spindles are narrowest. So, we had to dismantle these, fill the holes with putty, and rebuild them before the liquid nails we used dried. I also had to return to HomeDepot for more spindles to complete the third floor spindles... Nothing is as easy as it looks!

On yet another weekend that my parents came up to work on the house, we got rained out so I decided to begin working on the bathrooms. I had picked out the tile and my father and I laid it all out -- cutting the pieces we needed to complete the room.

This is the floor tile for the master bathroom. Still need to install the base of the tile, and then install the tile over mastic... But before we can do that, we are missing two important pieces. Marble thresholds for both bathrooms. HomeDepot did not have a great selection so we need to go to a tile store to pick these out.

this is the floor tile for the main 2nd floor bathroom. Once the grout and trim was added to the floor, there was absolutely no substitute for a nice tile floor in the well traveled floor of the bathroom.
